First KM Certification - Brief History of KM Certification
The first documented Knowledge Management certification began in 1995 when KMPro’s certification training provider, Hudson Associates Consulting Inc., began formally offering KM certifications and other KM training. And so, the known timeline of KM certification is:
1995 (early): Hudson Associates Consulting Inc. began formally offering KM certifications and other KM training, continuing today, taught by Dr. Dan Kirsch.
2000 (January): Knowledge Management Consortium International (KMCI) (according to KMCI corporate records) began offering certification taught by the founder
of KMCI (Ed Swanstrom). *
2000 (March): eKnowledgeCenter is founded by Ed Swanstrom (founder of KMCI) and began offering KM certification and KM training (eKnowledgeCenter continues to offer KM certification today as a part of
Hudson Associates Consulting, Inc.).
2001 (June) KMCI corporate records indicate that one certification workshop for KMCI was conducted for KMCI in
June 2001 by another party. KMCI ceased offering that workshop after the first session.
2002 (late): Knowledge Management Professional Society, Inc.(KMPro) began offering KM certification conducted for KMPro by another party from late 2002 through June 2004.
2003 (November): Knowledge Management Professional Society, Inc.(KMPro) began offering KM certification conducted for KMPro by Hudson Associates Consulting Inc. (taught by Dr. Dan Kirsch) from November 2003 to present.
* KMCI offered a KM certification until early 2003, and since it is believed that KMCI has offered a KM certificate program.
