CKM® Program Comparisons |
If you're
considering obtaining your KM certification and
are trying to decide between the CKM® programs
offered by KMPro and the course offered by International
Knowledge Management Institute (also known
as Knowledge Management Institute or KMI or IKMI),
then we think that you will find this information
useful in reaching your decision regarding which
program would benefit you the most.
Simply put – we offer the BEST KM
certification and training. Whether you are
a Chief Knowledge Officer (CKO) looking to
deepen your understanding of successful KM
implementation, or you are new to KM and about
to step into your first KM position, you want
to succeed. KMPro's CKM® certification
training is demonstrated to
provide you what you need to succeed.
What do we mean by demonstrated? We're not talking
about vague claims you may hear from other vendors
of KM training about how good their training supposedly
may be. We mean that based on actual assessments of
those attending the KMPro CKM® certification
training that with our training you actually learn
how to successfully implement Knowledge Management.
|
| For example, an assessment
conducted by a senior U.S. Government Knowledge
Management Officer having attended both the KMPro
CKM®
in December 2009 and the KM Institute course
in April 2009, demonstrated significant gains in understanding
of Knowledge Management after having attended the KMPro CKM® workshop.
Specifically, even after FIRST attending the KM Institute workshop,
when then attending the KMPro CKM® workshop there was a measured
80% increase in understanding of successful KM implementation, a
75% increase in ability to make informed recommendations and decisions
about KM, and a 60% increase in being more knowledgeable about
KM. (See

Excellent story telling, humor
and ties to our world (DoD). Knowledge
and ideas gained will improve my effectiveness
and results – I hope to apply this in my
Division across our Directorate and hopefully
in the future at Enterprise level. I have received other
KM (KM Institute) but this course made
that look very superficial. I see much more opportunity
for application with this course info.

The purpose of this short note is to
chronicle the exemplary quality of the KMPro
training received last week from Dr. Dan Kirsch.
I offer this from someone that in April 2006
undertook knowledge management certification
training from the other organization [Knowledge
Management Institute]. I can assure you that
to compare the two blocks of instruction is relatively
simple as the KMPro (Kirsch) training product
was so much more superior, engaging and thought-provoking
than the KM training provided in 2006. Dr. Kirsch
managed to outline KM models, case studies and
current as well as emerging doctrine using an
expert's approach while also displaying an engaging
style combined with a superior story-telling
capability. The bottom line is the Kirsch training
and certification program provided in Feb 08
[KMPro] was so more superior than the Apr 06
training [Knowledge Management Institute]. In
the end, there is actually no comparison.
COL James D. Clegg (retired),
KM Advisor, U.S. Army, I-Corps & Fort Lewis

email comparing the superior KMPro training vs. Knowledge Management Insitute
training. PDF file.]

|
In February 2008, I had the opportunity
to attend Dr. Dan Kirsch's Certified Knowledge
Manager Certification Workshop. The difference
in presentation quality and professional knowledge
content cannot be compared. Dr. Kirsch's course
content and instructional delivery was far superior
to that of the [Knowledge Management Institute].
CW4 James L. McKinley (retired),
U.S. Army Battle Command Knowledge System (BCKS)
[Read actual
letter comparing value of KMPro training vs. Knowledge Management Insitute
training, including complaints about quality of delivery of the KMI training
made to his then employer who'd partnered with KMI for KM training. See the IKMI
certificate that he turned in to KMPro after attending KMPro certification
workshop and stating that he no longer wanted a KMI certificate.]

By far, a better course than the Knowledge
Management Institute (KMI) certification course
that I took. This course I learned how to apply
KM and become a better contributor to the science
of KM. Good blend of anecdotes with instruction.

CKM® Workshop Testimonials |
| The following
testimonials were provided by some of our workshop participants: |
| |
As
a person who was new to the Knowledge Management profession
and being in an environment where KM was becoming one
of the major focus of efforts for the staff. I discussed
with my Chief of Staff that I had no experience in
KM and felt it would be extremely beneficial to me
and great for the command if I attended some training
to provide me with the requisite foundation to effectively
work as a Knowledge Management Officer and implement
a KM program at COMTHIRDFLT. As such, my COS sought
the advice of the only Navy’s certified KM he'd
heard of, CDR John Hearne, and he advised that the
best course to send me to was a course taught by KMPro
to prepare me professionally to be able to function
as the C3F AOR KMO. I also looked at the curriculum
being taught on the website and shared that with him
and we both knew it would provide me with what I needed
to facilitate helping the staff and our AOR understand
and embrace KM.
The most important reason is the fact of being certified by a company who is
known internationally in the KM world as providing the best and most comprehensive
curriculum in the area of KM and standby what they teach. Furthermore, once I
obtained my certification via KMPro and shared with other what the training was
like the others who were trying to do it via other companies immediately researched
KMPro and stopped their training with other companies and I am quite sure that
Dr. Kirsch has met some of them in his classes. KMPro is the recognized expert
in certifying personnel in KM and everyone from the Defense and Business industry
knows that as I am quickly finding out.
KMPro promotes KM awareness, support & development of KM best practices and
advancement of KM research and development. Since I began working as a Defense
Contractor I am often called upon because of my KM background to assist other
contractors at different companies with their KM efforts because they do not
have anyone with the requisite skills to work on the project and they are aware
of my KM background and have more often than not spoken with C3F on my ability
as a KM and the feedback has been great, however, when dealing with certain people
of leadership in the other companies I am often asked if I am a certified professional
because I work with their personnel who are certified professionals such as PMP
and CISSP and it seems because of that they are trusted and respected more for
that. The ability for others to know that I have a proven track record in the
area of KM would be a tremendous asset to me as well as the company I support.
The training I received at KMPro help me understand how the KM Strategic planning,
performance and metrics can be used to help organizations understand what they
do not know and when you show them using some type of measurement they are more
apt to be open to suggestions on how to improve the process to prevent the situation
in the future or accomplish the mission faster than before. Everything I have
worked on since attending this class has followed exactly as Dr. Kirsch explained
and it is only because of everything I learned in the KMPro class and the lessons
learned with working on KM projects that I see where KM fits into everything
I do daily and I am able to recognize immediately that KM is needed on a project
before we get too far in the process.

Technology Forum Ltd. (formerly Knowledge Management Officer, U.S. Navy, Commander

I
had 13 years of software engineering experience and
thought I knew it all. I knew a lot of concepts, but
was ignorant on how they fit into KM. After the workshop,
I was able to better understand these concepts within
the context of Knowledge Management. He used real world
examples, stops and explains it to you if you have
questions. I gained new knowledge and ideas during
the course – Balanced Scorecard, SECI, Knowledge
Strategy, tons of Low/No Cost KM Grass Roots implementation
ideas, typical KM job roles per expertise at different
levels, tools and practices – AAR, Kbases, yellow
pages, KPI/Metrics dashboards, ROI, CoP. We learned
how to make a KM elevator speech/pitch to our leaders
for homework of Day 1 - we refined it over the course
of the week. It was a cost effective way for my organization
to get me up to speed with respect to KM. The workshop
made a lot of sense to me.
Thomas Tatum, Sr. Software Engineer, General Dynamics
Information Technology

This
course actually exceeded my expectations. As I stated
in class – this course was LIFE CHANGING – how
I will see everything. Adefinite new way of looking
at all. Stories and experiences shared bring home the
points of course objectives. Easily understood, these
ideas will be easily used. Knowledge and ideas gained
will improve my effectiveness and results
– not just at work – but in life too!
Commander David Flick, KM/IS Operations, U.S. Joint
Forces Command

Best
course for content and delivery I've attended in at
least 20 years! Content just right to keep me going
to learn more. Our group already has plans to strengthen
our knowledge and present a strategic plan to incorporate
KM into future contracts.

Great
examples – anecdotes were very effective at illustrating
examples/points. I really had no idea what to expect...very
interesting topic that I will try to continue to improve
my knowledge/expertise. I will be able to use the knowledge
and ideas gained – am going to discuss having
others in my org. attend the training.

I am
so very glad that I attended your workshop; and believe
me when I say that the benefits are already paying off.
I revamped my normal KM presentation that I give different
groups to introduce them to KM; after I was certified
I realized that I was completely approaching it wrong.
I've presented my new material and gave lots of story
examples that you gave, and the feedback has been amazingly
positive and word about KM at my site has been spreading
like wildfire. One of the managers that I presented to
sent out a mass email to other managers strongly encouraging
them to hear my presentation. Then another employee who
saw my presentation decided to do an article for his department's
newsletter just about me and my certification and the
value of KM...crazy! So I first want to thank you for
being such a great teacher and encouraging me to go out
and spread the word of KM.

I chose
to obtain my certification from KMPro because they
were the provider of choice for my organization since
they are the industry leader in KM. The CKM course
enabled me to see KM in a whole new light. I have always
viewed it from the transport layer of communications
and now I see it goes well beyond that layer. The certification
gave me the professional credentials to state the case
from a more professional level.

Course objectives
were completely supported by use of cases, actual commercial
and gov't examples, and substantial discussion. Course
exceeded expectations and reinforced credibility into
the often distorted concepts of knowledge management.
The fundamental concepts, principles and practices
presented during the course were invaluable. Without
question will dramatically improve effectiveness and
results of our current efforts. Absolutely one of the
most beneficial courses I have been able to attend,
and Dr. Dan Kirsch is without Question one of the foremost
authorities on knowledge management.

Course was
everything I expected -- I have wanted to take this
course since I became a KM Analyst. In fact, I wanted
and needed this course so bad, I took leave without
pay to take this course. Dr. Dan kept the course interesting
and easy-going the entire week. He definitely understands
the KM field and understands what we (the KM community)
go through and provides feasible solutions. I have
a better understanding of KM concepts. My plan is to
use what I've learned to make my deliverables more
effective for my clients, e.g., strategic plans, operation
plans, etc. I feel that this course has made me dangerous
-- the course has motivated me to become more knowledgeable
about KM and to be a KM savior. Achieving the KMPro
CKM® certification provides legitimacy as to what
I do as a KM analyst.

Instructor
- totally knowledgeable about subject. Great stories
to demonstrate important point. I needed this course
as a 'booster shot' to re-energize my KM enthusiasm.
The comments and information about communicating with

Finally,
someone has pulled together key KM concepts & presented
them in an understandable way. Wow! One of the best (maybe
the best) workshops I've ever attended. I wish we could

Achieving this KMPro CKM® is important to me – it
will absolutely enhance my performance now and in the
future.

Instructor was extremely
knowledgeable about KM. I felt confident he knew what
he is talking about. I am more confident that I can
intelligently talk/explain better what KM is and create
an action plan that will guide me with my commands
KM implementation. I will be able to use the knowledge
gained to develop my command's KM strategy and be able
to impact to a greater degree our organizational learning.
Knowledge and ideas gained will improve my effectiveness
-- I will be able to sit through meetings and be able
to evaluate what direction we might want to persue
vice going for quick results that are not addressing
the strategic mission. This is the course that all
information professionals detailed as KMs "should" attend!!!

After I had decided
to obtain a certificate in Knowledge Management, I
examined my options, including university coursework
and other KM certificates. KMPro offered the best solution
for my schedule and also came highly recommended from
my supervisor, who also obtained her CKM from KMPro.
KMPro is an organization that values networks and connections
between people. Being certified by KMPro is more than
a certification, it is the opportunity to become part
of a community. Being a part of this community provides
both recognition of expertise, and opportunities for
future growth. The CKM workshop helped me put all the
pieces together. I finished my master's degree in library
science a year ago and my first professional library
job is in knowledge management. That was a big mental
shift for me, and I tackled the problem by reading
books and articles, and attending conferences. However,
these activities are not truly interactive and I was
more of an observer than a participant. The small group
atmosphere of the CKM class allowed me to absorb more
information and think more deeply about my own thoughts
on the subject. The things that I knew about KM that
were still unexpressed became much clearer to me. This
was very important for the next project I worked on
because it was something that we had to sell to all
the directors and managers, as well as explain clearly
to our experts. By clarifying my own thoughts, I was
much better prepared to explain the benefits of KM
and our knowledge capture project to all of the stakeholders.
In addition, I have been better able to frame our goals
to the experts we are interviewing regarding the type
of knowledge we would like them to share - not that
which has already been expressed, but that which is
still expressible.

One of the best instructors I've had in years. Not very many people can hold your attention through an 8-hour class but Dr. Dan did it while keeping the material relevant. The course added a good blend of case studies with theory to make it relevant and actually far exceeded my expectations. The course lined up the lessons I learned from business school and aligned them to KM theory in ways that can only help my organization move forward.

Dan did an
excellent job circling back to related topics and examples
together. The case studies maintained a constant theme
throughout the program and kept building upon ideas.
This program dispelled my initial idea of what this
topic was about. It showed me that KM is a discipline
and gave me a starting point to build a foundation.
I got a starting point but more importantly got a treasure
map to start seeking more knowledge about this discipline.
I also learned about how much I don't know and therefore
how much my client doesn't know. I got the keys to
the knowledge chest –
now I need to keep adding to it. I find the ideas fascinating and useful.
I'm excited about learning more and building my knowledge value.

able to identify KM vs. IT. There is too much focus/fallacy
in using Sharepoint as KM, and it is not KM.

Outstanding presentations. I
gained new knowledge and ideas during the course -
a clear explanation of tacit knowledge (finally). Achieving
this KMPro CKM certification is very important to me
-- I encountered some of the concepts in library school
and am very excited to see practical implementation
possibilities.
Christine Barrett, Chief, Archives
Branch, U.S. Army Center for Army Lessons Learned

KMPro was recommended to me by
a couple of colleagues. Several individuals within
my company had attended different training offerings,
when compared to those offerings, they believed that
KMPro offered exceptional curriculum and approach to
KM. The curriculum, processes, procedures, tools, and
techniques taught and learned within the KMPro program
had everything to do with preparing me for this project.
Prior to attending the KMPro training, I had attempted
and failed three times to orchestrate a KM program.
Marrying the KMPro philosophies, along with my companies
culture and practices and folding in some of the APQC
stages of implementation concepts, provided the foundation
for success.

I obtained my CKM from KMPro
because of the recommendations from others in the KM
field that I trust and the rigor of the training. Much
of the KM training I saw was not standardized or very
focused but this training was different. It was very
applicable to military implementation of KM. The specific
KM Project I have been working is working with the
Pacific Command and Standing Joint Force Headquarters
staff to improve information sharing processes, knowledge
capture and reuse. Having the training and certification
gave me the tools to use to identify many areas that
needed to be aligned to ensure the project worked (i.e.,
it is not just the technology implementation piece,
the process, training, organization etc. elements all
need to be aligned and properly planned for in tandem).
LCDR Danelle Barrett, Control Systems
Division Knowledge Manager and SJFHQ Information Operations
Planner, PACOM

4-Stars. Thanks so
much - I am very impressed with your diverse experience. The
training was valuable and I feel better qualified
as a KM `manager because of the training. I also feel
that being certified by KM Pro gives me more credentials
when interacting with my KM peers. The CKM class has
given me more insight and tools for a KM vision and
strategy for my command. The KMPro Certification qualifies
me to feel more prepared for developing more KM projects

This was an excellent
jam-packed session and in a short span Dr. Kirsch shared
a lot with us. As a presenter, Dr. Kirsch has this gift
of explaining complicated theories by relating to normal
day to day activities that made it easier for me to understand
and apply them in my own organization. I loved the Elevator
speeches part of the course. This allowed me to
apply whatever I learned in a particular module in a form
that can be readily used when someone asks me about that
topic in a rehearsed way. Sometimes you only get one chance
and a few seconds to explain to your decision maker what
initiative you are currently working on and in these cases
the elevator speeches work like magic.
In this crash course he also managed to update all the
major business theories -- some of which have been changed
since I finished graduate school 11 years ago. I was very
impressed by his deep strategic and organizational knowledge
in many of the areas that I inquired about. He brought
his life-long experience to the class and every second
of every day kept me on my toes.
My favorite part of the learning was simple and practical
ideas on how to implement KM in the organization and
ways to motivate people around me to make my KM efforts
successful. If you are thinking of implementing KM or
learning about it this is your one stop learning class.
Even if you have been doing KM for a while you will
be amazed to see how many things you can do different
to make an impact in your initiative after leaving this
useful training.
Asim Aziz, CEO, SAPMadeEasy, Inc.

Wow! Excellent class. Surpassed
all of my expectations. Thanks Dan. I just want to say
thank you very much for a fabulous course. I am blown
away by the concepts you delivered in both the breadth
and depth. Great stories that tie concepts together.
Flow is well laid out. Fantastic information. This was
by far, the single best course I have ever participated
in. I couldn't stop thinking about how to apply the
things I learned and did quite a bit of work on the
plane ride home.
I recommend that if you have any money to spend on education,
Dan Kirsch would be the only choice in my book. I attended
his KMPro CKM course 3 weeks ago and was completely
blown away. He is the best KM educator I have ever seen!

I have
studied many of the KM best practices in use today and
have also read a library of text books, articles and whitepapers

I consider you amongst the leaders in the field.

I was a student of
Dr. Dan's in the Knowledge Management Certification class.
He is an excellent presenter with a wealth of practical
experience to share. His expertise runs the gamut from
history of KM through facilitating creating a KM group

the progress of your project. Dan's broad experience adds
practical value to the theoretical content of the course.
He has my strong endorsement.

The purpose of this
short note is to chronicle the exemplary quality of
the KMPro training received last week from Dr. Dan
Kirsch. I offer this from someone that in April 2006
undertook knowledge management certification training
from the other organization [Knowledge Management Institute].
I can assure you that to compare the two blocks of
instruction is relatively simple as the KMPro (Kirsch)
training product was so much more superior, engaging
and thought-provoking than the KM training provided
in 2006. Dr. Kirsch managed to outline KM models, case
studies and current as well as emerging doctrine using
an expert's approach while also displaying an engaging
style combined with a superior story-telling capability.
The bottom line is the Kirsch training and certification
program provided in Feb 08 [KMPro] was so more superior
than the Apr 06 training [Knowledge Management Institute].
In the end, there is actually no comparison.

I had to kludge together
something on my own to develop facilitatators and peer
mentors, so this really hit the mark with me. Not only
did this give me some indepth thought and study, but
let me see there have actually been some processes
to make me more effective. Result, I feel more confident
in my efforts. If I had known about this 3 years ago,
I would have paid out of my pocket for this. Thanks

Dan's strengths --
knowledge of KM, ability to use metaphors. Incredibly

Going through Dr.

the application of KM processes. It's one thing to
read about it, it's another to discuss it in a small

helped lay the foundation for me to go out and work
in the KM world and support our customers. Good use
of stories to bring lesson ideas to light. Helped
one understand better. I got a lot more out of this

Real world stories made the learning
come alive. This course exceeded my expectations because
it helped me restructure my previous knowledge in actionable
ways. I've been doing some of this without knowing
it - only now I know why some things have worked & others
haven't. I'm confident that I now have more tools to
use.

Good stories, well
prepared, well organized. Very informative. I think this
program finally helps us put together the knowledge management
program that we all knew we were capable of, but had no
clear path identified to get there.

Dr. Dan kept all of
us interested. He was able to broaden our minds, and get
responses we didn't think that we were capable of. I'm
impressed with an instructor that can keep our young team
interested and focused long enough, and Dr. Dan did both
with interesting commentary and humorous anecdotes.
