Our Role
In Knowledge Management Certification
The Knowledge Management Professional
Society (KMPro) is more than just a volunteer-run KM professional
society; we are an industry authority and our members are experts
in the KM field. As the world's largest KM professional society,
one of our roles is to initiate, establish, evaluate, maintain
and administer professional credentialing programs that promote
and support knowledge management professionals and the knowledge
management profession. In support of that KMPro operates the
Knowledge Management Certification Board (KMCB)®.
An important consideration when determining which KM certification
to pursue is in who issues that certification -- which indicates
who or what that certification is backed and supported by. ONLY
KMPro offers a KM certification which is issued by a non-profit
professional society, backed by the only non-profit KM certification
board in the world. While there are “others” who
are currently issuing some other sort of KM certification
(some with similar names), please note that they are actually
offered by for-profit companies, privately-held, and their
certifications are ONLY backed by those for-profit
companies. [Also note their claims about all those that their
organization somehow certified since 2001 -- an interesting
claim given that they incorporated their company in Virginia
in December 2005 and it didn't exist prior to that!]
And as the leading KM professional society with more than
120,000 members worldwide, a Knowledge Management Professional
Society (KMPro) certification is widely recognized and accepted
as the “benchmark”
for any comparison programs.
About
Our KM Certification Programs
Some “certifications” are based upon
a very narrow set of criteria that at best is applicable
to only a portion of KM practitioners (e.g., U.S. Federal government
“learning objectives” identified several years ago
but never implemented and not recognized by any agency).
Other “certifications” are little more than memorization
exercises, or preparation for a test that seeks to validate
that memorization has occurred even if that “learning”
has no relationship to real-life KM implementation.
KMPro's certification is performance-based rather than simply
being education-based. In addition to ensuring that candidates
meet a baseline level of educational requirements, it recognizes
that real-life KM practitioners need to be able to implement
KM. And our advanced level certifications all our KM practicioner
members to demonstrate practical proficiency and expertise in
knowledge management in ways that are in keeping with the criteria
of the Society (and the opportunity to earn a “Certified
Knowledge Management Professional”™ or “Master Certified
Knowledge Management Professional”™ designation!).
KMPro's KM certifications are by far the knowledge management
credential of choice across a vast array of industries, companies,
and government agencies alike. By attaining a KMPro credential,
your name will be included in the most prestigious group of
certified professionals in the knowledge management community.
KMPro's Certified
Knowledge Manager (CKM)™ certification is the knowledge
management credential of choice and it is the only KM certification
program which focuses upon a best-practice, Strategic KM approach
to successful KM implementation.
When you complete our CKM® certification workshop, you
also come away with the benefit of having the world's leading KM
organization standing behind your certification. Others may
claim to offer what KMPro offers, but we stand behind
our claims and can offer substance rather than unsubstantiated
claims -- and KMPro has existed as a professional society
for KM professionals since 2001. And other organizations may
claim that their certifications are backed by a certification
body, but the fact of the matter is that the only independent
non-profit KM certification body -- Knowledge Management Certification
Board -- has become a part of KMPro.
KMPro's Advanced
Professional Certifications
To better support your KM professional
development, KMPro CKM® certification graduates are also
eligible to further their professional development through
participation in our Advanced
Professional Certification Program.
The KMPro Advanced
Professional Certification Program (also see this
article) was specifically developed to mirror best-practice
certification programs currently utilized by the major non-KM
professional societies and our program is unique within the
KM professional community -- only KMPro offers both a
CKMP® -- “Certified Knowledge Management Professional” (CKMP)™
and a MKMP® -- “Master Certified Knowledge Management Professional”
(MKMP)™ professional certifications.
The MKMP® designation is awarded by KMPro to experienced
practitioners in the field of Knowledge Management (KM) based
upon demonstration of practical application of knowledge management.
To earn this designation, each of the candidates must first
complete a KMPro CKM® certification workshop, then qualify
for the KMPro Certified Knowledge Management Professional
(CKMP)™
by successfully completing a knowledge management project and
providing documentation of that project completion to KMPro.
Each MKMP® candidate then submites documentation demonstrating
that they have at least three years experience in successful
knowledge management implemenation.
The CKMP™® designation is awarded by KMPro to experienced
practitioners in the field of Knowledge Management (KM) based
upon demonstration of practical application of knowledge management.
To earn this designation, each of the candidates must first
complete a KMPro CKM® certification workshop, then qualify
for the KMPro Certified Knowledge Management Professional
(CKMP)™
by successfully completing a knowledge management project and
providing documentation of that project completion to KMPro.
Note: Both CKMP® -- “Certified Knowledge Management Professional”
(CKMP)™ and MKMP® -- “Master Certified Knowledge Management Professional”
(MKMP)™ professional certifications are trademarks licensed to KMPro
and these certifications are ONLY available through KMPro as
the legitimate licensee of those programs.
